A tiny jewel of a public library, Friend Memorial Library was built one hundred years ago to serve the small town of Brooklin, ME, and the villages nearby. The award-winning building, with its excellent collection of library materials, sits at the center of the village. It is a popular gathering place for the community and is funded entirely by local residents and library users past and present. SKETCH is a community arts initiative in Toronto that creates opportunities for street-involved and homeless youth aged 15 – 29 by offering them tools to engage in the arts, a safe place to express and create, and opportunities to creatively integrate back into community life. SKETCH supports and facilitates community connections with education, leadership, and apprenticeships in arts industries through exhibition, performance, and sale of artwork. The mission of InsideOUT Writers is to free the creative voice locked within incarcerated and at-risk youth. They provide positive and empowering experiences using creative writing as a means to foster honest introspection, socially responsible behavior, and to build a foundation for living productive lives. Riverkeeper is an independent, member-supported environmental organization founded on the premise that citizens themselves must roll up their sleeves to defend our waterways. Riverkeeper’s mission is to protect the ecological integrity of the Hudson River and its tributaries, and to safeguard the drinking water supply of New York City and the lower Hudson Valley. The Theodore Payne Foundation is an organization dedicated to promoting and restoring California landscapes and habitats and propagating native plants and wildflowers. Helping Hands: Helpers for the Disabled serves quadriplegic and other people with severe spinal cord injuries or mobility-impairments by providing highly trained capuchin monkeys to assist with daily activities. The staff at Helping Hands raise and train these monkeys to act as live-in companions who, over the course of twenty to thirty years, will provide the gifts of independence, companionship, dignity and hope to the people they help, all at no cost.
